Raila Heads to India for a 10-Day Visit

Opposition leader Raila Odinga left the country on Sunday for a 10-day visit to India, where he will attend to personal matters.

Odinga is also scheduled to have official engagements with business leaders, focusing on Africa’s Infrastructure Development, his communications director Dennis Onyango said on Sunday.

“Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga has left the country for India to attend to personal matters and have official engagements with various players in his capacity as AU [African Union] Infrastructure High Representative for Africa," Onyango said in a statement.

He added: "While in India, Mr. Odinga will visit the cities of Hyderabad and Trivandrumis for meetings with business leaders with interests in Africa’s infrastructure development.”

In a tweet on Sunday, Odinga said he will be visiting several countries starting with India.

"Baba has left the country for a week's visit to several nations starting with India; see you all when I’m back. Meanwhile, can William Ruto & Kenya Kwanza stop it with the lamentations?" he posted.

His trip to India comes days after he held talks with the country’s new High Commissioner to Kenya Namgya Khampa, where they discussed ties between the two nations.

"The strong bond and ties between our nations formed the core of our discussion as we hosted India's new High Commissioner to Kenya, Namgya Khampa. We wish her all the best as she begins her tour of duty in Nairobi," Odinga said after the meeting on Tuesday.

This is his first trip outside of Africa since he lost his fifth bid at the presidency in the August 9th general election.
