Sh400 Million Graft Case Against Former Kenya Power Managing Director Ben Chumo Withdrawn

John Wanjohi Oct 12, 2022

The Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) Noordin Haji has withdrawn the Sh400 million graft case against former Kenya Power Managing Director Ben Chumo and 10 others, citing a lack of evidence.

Haji withdrew the case on Wednesday under Section 87 (a) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Chumo and his co-accused had been charged with conspiracy to commit an offense, aiding the commission of a felony, willful failure to comply with procurement laws, conspiracy to defeat justice and fraudulent acquisition of public property.

His co-defendants included his successor Ken Tarus, Beatrice Meso, K.P Mungai, Joshua Mutua, Abubakar Swaleh, Samuel Ndirangu, Stanley Mutwiri, Benson Muriithi, Peter Mwicigi and John Ombui.

The charges related to the procurement and supply of faulty transformers worth more than Sh400 million.

The move comes months after the DPP also withdrew charges against the directors of Muwa Trading Company Ltd, James Njenga Mungai, Grace Wanjira Mungai and John Mungai in March. The company was accused of supplying faulty transformers to KPLC.
