Gachagua: We will Return Kenya's Economy to Where Kibaki Left it in Two Years

John Wanjohi Oct 12, 2022

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua insists that the Kenya Kwanza administration inherited a dilapidated economy and it will take time to fix the situation.

While calling on Kenyans to be patient, the deputy president said they are struggling to raise funds to support government programs as the money in the Treasury is being used to pay salaries and service public debts.

“We have inherited a dilapidated economy and we have work to do to turn around the economy of this country. We will be calling upon all of you to bear with us because it is not easy,” he said.

“There are many measures that will be taken to address the situation, but I want to give you hope.”

Gachagua indicated that they held a meeting with Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) to find ways of collecting Sh3 trillion this year to fund the development budget.

“In the fullness of time, we will turn around the economy of this country, first and foremost in the first two years God willingly, to return Kenya where President Mwai Kibaki left us and progressively turn around the economy to improve the quality of lives,” he added.

The deputy president was speaking during a meeting on Education Reforms in Karen, Nairobi on Wednesday.

The Kenya Kwanza administration is under pressure to address the rising cost of living. During his campaigns, President Ruto promised to bring down the cost of living within his first 100 days in office.
