Ruto: Jesus Christ Was a Product of the Bottom-Up Philosophy

John Wanjohi Jul 08, 2022

Deputy President William Ruto says Jesus Christ was a product of the bottom-up economic model which he has touted as the panacea for Kenya’s economic woes.

Speaking on Friday in Nakuru County where he drummed up support for his presidential bid, the deputy president pointed out that the bottom-up economic model was inspired by the bible, adding that Jesus Christ was the true testament to the analogy.

“Even Jesus was a product of the bottom-up…Jesus was not someone held in high status so much. He was the son of a carpenter and even some questioned if someone from Nazareth can amount to something. Because he was at the bottom,” said Ruto.

Ruto, who is eyeing the presidency on a UDA party ticket, further likened the glorification of Jesus Christ in the biblical scriptures to the hustlers’ movement which he predicted will win the August 9th elections.

“God removes the oppressed from the dust. At the bottom where there is dust he raise the poor and makes them sit with kings and queens. Do you need any better explanation of the bottom up?” he posed.

This is not the first time Ruto has used the bible to explain his ‘bottom-up’ economic model. Earlier this year, he compared the model to the sermon in Psalms 113:7-8 which states, “He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap, he seats them with princes of his people.”

He challenged critics of the bottom-up economic philosophy to read the bible verse, saying it summarizes the philosophy.

"Neno la Mungu linatuambia Mungu humtoa mnyonge mavumbini," Ruto stated.

Ruto has pledged to employ the economic model to revive the country’s economy and uplift the lives of low-income earners. He says that the bottom-up conversation “will burry tribalism, patronage, cronyism, and corruption.”
