UK Trade Envoy to Kenya Resigns Over Lack of Confidence in Prime Minister Boris Johnson

John Wanjohi Jul 06, 2022

The United Kingdom Trade envoy to Kenya Theo Clarke has resigned, citing a lack of confidence in Prime Minister Boris Johnson's administration.

Clarke said she can no longer work with Johnson, who she accused of taking matters of sexual misconduct lightly after the Prime Minister elevated a colleague facing sexual misconduct to a position of pastoral care for MPs.

“To learn that you chose to elevate a colleague to a position of pastoral care for MPs, whilst in full knowledge of his own wrongdoing, shows a severe lack of judgment and care for your Parliamentary party.”

“I was shocked to see colleagues defending the Government with assurances that have turned out to be false. This is not the way that any responsible Government should act,” Clarke, who also serves as an MP, said in her resignation letter.

Clarke stated that being a member of the Women and Equalities Select Committee, she takes matters relating to sexual misconduct seriously and would not want to be part of a government that faces failure in its leadership.

"I think that we need to draw a line under the current debacle and get a grip on Government on the public's behalf, as well as, most importantly, the county," she added.

Clarke says she will continue to represent her constituents to the best of her ability in Parliament and stand up for what she believes is right.

Johnson has admitted he made a ‘mistake’ in appointing Chris Pincher as deputy chief whip in February this year despite being aware of misconduct allegations against him. Picher is accused of groping two men.

Clarke’s resignation comes after two other top ministers announced their resignations on Tuesday, saying they could no longer tolerate the culture of scandal that has stalked Johnson’s government.
