Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya Coalition to Unveil Raila’s Running Mate on Monday
Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya coalition party will unveil Raila Odinga’s running mate on Monday.
The spokesperson of Odinga's Presidential Campaign Secretariat Prof. Makau Mutua said the long-awaited announcement will not be made on Sunday as earlier expected.
"Our campaign is aware that Kenyans are anxious to know the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya presidential ticket. We will make the announcement tomorrow," Mutua said in a statement on Sunday.
Earlier reports suggested that Odinga would name his running mate during a mega rally at the historic Kamukunji Grounds in Nairobi on Sunday afternoon.
On Thursday, the Azimio La Umoja-One Kenya coalition presidential running mate selection panel presented three names to Odinga for consideration. The panel said the three nominees were submitted in order of priority.
The panel picked the three nominees from a list of 10 candidates who were interviewed for the position. They included Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Nark-Kenya leader Martha Karua, former presidential candidate Peter Kenneth, Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Peter Munya, and Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho.
Others were Murang’a Woman Representative Sabine Chege, Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu, Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui, and former Kenyan ambassador to Australia Stephen Tarus.
On Sunday, Deputy President William Ruto, who is vying for the presidency under the UDA party and Kenya Kwanza alliance, named Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua as his running mate.
Gachagua was picked from a list of other candidates including Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, Tharaka Nithi Senator Kithure Kindiki, and MPs Ndindi Nyoro (Kiharu) and Alice Wahome (Kandara).
