Shock as a 34-Year-Old Man is Boiled to Death at a Thika Steel Factory
The family of a 34-year-old man is seeking justice after he was boiled to death at a metal factory in Thika, Kiambu County.
It is reported that Caleb Otieno was trapped inside a boiler at the steel manufacturing factory in Thika on Friday.
Citizen Digital reported that the man, who was working at the boiler’s section, was liquefied in an incident that has left his family and co-workers in shock and grief.
His brother John Agwambo says Otieno was in his routine duties at the open boiler when the gloves he was wearing allegedly stuck in one of the metals he was pushing into the boiler. No part of Otieno’s body was recovered as they were smashed and mixed with the boiler’s contents.
"We were told that he might have tripped and fallen into the boiler and the body cannot be found since the temperatures are usually very high and the body is already liquefied and therefore we cannot get anything even for the burial," Agwambo said,
He added: "HR wametuambia tukuje Monday but so far we feel like they are taking us in circles. We have tried to inquire on a lot of things but it seems they’re hiding something...they’re just telling us police investigations are underway.”
The family is appealing to the government to intervene to ensure justice is served. They also want authorities to crack down on industries to ascertain whether safety measures for workers are upheld.
"What we want is justice for the family which has lost their second-born son. He was the breadwinner. We’re losing lives in these industries, because of lack of security. The government should intervene and enforce the law on all companies to ensure there is safety."
Otieno had worked at the established steel company for at least seven years.
