Sh400 Million Nairobi Hospital Named After First Lady Margaret Kenyatta

John Wanjohi Dec 13, 2021

Mathare-Korogocho Level 5 Hospital has been renamed Mama Margaret Kenyatta Hospital in honor of the First Lady.

The health facility located in Mathare North was constructed by the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) at a cost of Sh400 million.

NMS Director-General Lieutenant General Mohamed Badi says the hospital will open its doors to patients this week ahead of its official commissioning by President Kenyatta later this month.

With a capacity of 350 beds, the facility is the biggest hospital under the management of the County Government of Nairobi.

"This hospital had stalled for years but will in a week’s time open its doors to the public awaiting its commissioning," General Badi said on Monday.

The construction of this hospital started in the early 1990s but was grounded until last year when President Kenyatta directed the NMS to oversee its completion.

The five-story facility will become the first county referral hospital under the management of the county government and is expected to reduce the patient load at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, which serves over 2.1 million people in the Eastlands area.

Mama Margaret Kenyatta Hospital will have in-patient wards, a 24-hour pharmacy, kidney dialysis centre, an ICU, burns unit and theatres.

Dr. Ouma Oluga, the Director of Health Services at NMS, says the hospital will also reduce the number of walk-in patients at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

"We call on the public to take advantage specialized health care services available for free or at subsidized rates in these facilities," said Dr. Oluga.
