Nairobi Governor Ann Kananu Picks Paul Mutungi as Deputy Governor

John Wanjohi Nov 17, 2021

Nairobi Governor Ann Kananu has nominated Paul Mutungi for the position of deputy governor.

This comes a day after she was sworn in as the third and first female governor of Nairobi County.

“Pursuant to Section 32C (1)(a) of the County Governments Act, I do hereby nominate Mr. Paul Mutunga Mutungi to the position of Deputy Governor,” Kananu said in a notice to Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Benson Mutura.

Mutungi, a former councillor, has been serving as the County’s Chief of Staff since January this year. He unsuccessfully contested for the Embakasi South parliamentary seat in the 2017 elections.

Speaker Mutura is expected to table Mutungi’s name in the assembly on Friday for vetting by a select committee.

After vetting, the committee will then table a report in the house for approval or rejection.

Kananu, who has been serving as the county’s Deputy Governor following the impeachment of Governor Mike Sonko in December last year, was sworn in as governor on Tuesday.

The Supreme Court last week cleared the way for Kananu’s swearing-in after dismissing an appeal by Sonko, who was seeking to stop the oath pending the hearing and determination of a case challenging his impeachment. The apex court said it lacked the jurisdiction to consider the appeal.
