Fire Guts Down a Dormitory at Jamhuri High School in Nairobi
A fire broke out at Jamhuri High School in Nairobi on Sunday night, razing down one of the dormitories. The 300-student capacity hall of residence went up in flames at around 8:00pm.
Firefighters from the Nairobi County government and police arrived at the scene to battle the raging fire whose cause was not immediately established.
Witnesses said the inferno destroyed the one-storey building and was about to spread to adjacent buildings. “The roof of the building has caved in, it is a huge fire,” said a witness.
Students were evacuated to the school playground and no casualties were reported.
The incident comes amid calls for a probe into the new wave of fire cases in schools across the country.
Over the past week, fire incidences have been reported in about 10 schools including Maranda High, Kakamega High, Mwala Girls, Nyamira Boys, and Nambale High. This prompted MPs to summon Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha to discuss the wave of fires in schools.
