John Wanjohi Jun 22, 2021

At least three people were injured after part of the Kangemi Flyover that is under construction collapsed.

The three were trapped under debris following the Monday evening incident along Waiyaki Way in Nairobi.

Confirming the incident, Kenya National Highways Authority (KenNHA) said two people sustained minor wounds while the third person suffered serious injuries.

They were rushed to Eagles Hospital in Westlands where two of them were treated and discharged while the remaining was referred to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

Charles Njogu, a communication officer KenNHA indicated that cut soil collapsed as the retaining wall was being reinforced.

Witnesses said the workers on the lower side of the flyover were buried in the sand after one of the pillars and a wall collapsed.

It is not clear whether there were more people trapped beneath the rubble, with Westlands sub-county police commander Lilian Obura confirming that rescue efforts were underway.

The collapsed flyover is part of the Sh16 billion Waiyaki Way expansion project awarded to China Wu Yi construction company.
