Three Koinange Family Members Fight for Jubilee Party Ticket in Kiambaa By-Election

John Wanjohi May 05, 2021

Three members of the Koinange family are set to battle it out for the Jubilee Party ticket for the upcoming Kiambaa parliamentary by-election.

The seat fell vacant following the death of MP Paul Koinange, who died of COVID-19 related complications while receiving treatment at the Nairobi Hospital on March 31st.

Five aspirants have submitted applications seeking to vie for the seat on a Jubilee Party ticket, according to the ruling outfit’s secretary-general Raphael Tuju.

Among the five aspirants are three members of the Koinange family, including late MP’s widow June Koinange, former Cabinet Minister Mbiyu Koinange’s daughter Lenah Koinange, and her niece Damaris Wambui.

The governing party will hold a nomination exercise to pick its candidate for the by-election on May 15th.

Tuju says only the most popular candidate will be chosen to fly the party’s flag in the Kiambaa by-election slated for July 15th.

“I don’t think we will have any problem because what we will do is a credible nomination process. We want to assure all the aspirants that we will do a credible process in identifying the right candidate,” said Tuju.

The President Kenyatta-led party is keen on recapturing the seat since the departed MP was elected under the party.
