Waiguru Over the Moon as Son Helps Brookhouse School Win Continental Competition

John Wanjohi Apr 24, 2021

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru is a proud mother as her son was among a group of Nairobi’s Brookhouse School students that bagged a continental award recently.

Brookhouse School was declared the winner of the University of Dundee’s African Schools Mooting Competition 2021.

This year’s competition brought together learners from Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, and Zimbabwe, and saw 13 teams make a case against an opposing counsel before two judges.

The teams were required to make submissions in a fictional civil law appeal before the UK Supreme Court.

Ghana’s Tema International School (TIS) and Chisipite Senior School of Zimbabwe finished in second and third places respectively.

“This is the fifth Mock Trial Competition Dundee Law School has run in Africa. Whilst the global pandemic meant that we were not able to conduct the competition face to face, the move online opened the door to making it a pan-African event. It was wonderful to bring schools and young people together from across the continent,” said Professor Peter McEleavy, Barrister, Professor of Law and Academic Lead for Sub-Saharan Africa at the University of Dundee.

“The standard this year was the highest we have encountered. The senior high school pupils got to grips with complex legal concepts and produced compelling submissions. I have no doubt that many will go on to be legal stars of the future.”

Governor Waiguru took to Twitter on Saturday to congratulate her son Ron Waiguru for being part of the eight-member Brookhouse School winning team.

“So proud of my son Ron & his @BrookhouseInt teammates for the outstanding performance at African Schs Mooting Competition 2021 & winning 1st position in Africa. “@fredngatia_@ahmednasirlaw@DonaldBKipkorir watch out. the future is here!#ProudMum,” she tweeted.

Members of the winning team received a £100 (Sh15,000) voucher each and a scholarship of £5,000 (Sh750,000) per year if they apply and be accepted to Dundee’s LLB programs.
