40 Percent of Current MPs Hold Fake Documents, Moses Kuria Says

Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria claims that at least 40 percent of the MPs in the current parliament hold fake academic certificates.

The outspoken MP further alleged that the only genuine document this group of legislators has is a driver’s license.

“For about 40% of the MPs in the 12th parliament, the only genuine document they hold is a driving License,” said Kuria.

The 12th Parliament consists of 349 members of the National Assembly and 67 Senators.

While Kuria’s claim is only a personal opinion, the country’s formal employment sector has been dogged with fake academic certificate holders.

Early this year, the Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA) revealed that a third of Kenyans in the formal sector have fake documents. This represents about one million out of the three million Kenyans working in the formal employment sector.

KNQA Chairperson Dr. Kilemi Mwiria said fake certificate holders have secured formal jobs at the expense of well-educated employment seekers.

“We are working with all stakeholders to eradicate this practice that is denying Kenyans with genuine academic documents, an opportunity to benefit from their hard work in school,” said Dr. Mwiria.

In partnership with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), KNQA launched a countrywide crackdown on fake academic certificate holders.
