The Obama family has appealed to the government to facilitate the repatriation of Keziah Aoko’s remains to Kenya for burial.

Keziah, who was the step-mother of former US President Barack Obama, passed away on Tuesday while undergoing treatment at a hospital in the United Kingdom.

She is the mother of Obama’s half-siblings Auma Obama, Malik Obama, Sadik Obama, and Abo Obama.

Addressing the press on Thursday, Keziah’s first-born son Malik pleaded with the government authorities to allow the family to ferry her remains to Kenya for final burial rites.

“With Covid-19 (pandemic) the world is constricted. There are many restrictions…we are appealing to the authorities and the government at large to grant us passage and make it easy for us to bring our mama home as soon as possible,” said Malik.

He continued: “We are quite aware of the situation right now with Covid-19 and the restrictions that are in place but we just want the way to be opened for us.”

Malik also took the opportunity to clarify that his mother, who was battling diabetes, died at the age of 78 and not 81 as reported in a section of local media.

The deceased was the first wife of Barack Obama Snr and is survived by her four children.
