John Wanjohi Dec 18, 2020

President Kenyatta’s family is mourning the passing of one of their kin.

Uhuru was on Friday morning spotted at the Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi in the company of First Lady Margret Kenyatta and other family members.

The Star reports that the president was at the funeral parlor following the demise of his niece, who is said to have collapsed and died on Friday.

The identity of the deceased was not immediately established as the media was barred from covering Uhuru’s visit to the mortuary.

"It is alleged that his niece collapsed and died earlier this morning," a source who sought anonymity told The Star.

Pictures taken by the local daily show President Kenyatta making his way into the funeral home in a Range Rover. He was behind the wheel while his wife was in the front passenger seat.

There was a heavy police presence around the funeral home before the president arrived. He was at the facility for about 15 minutes before leaving.

Uhuru’s visit to Lee Funeral Home also came hours after the passing of Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama, who died while undergoing treatment at the Nairobi Hospital at around 4:00 am on Friday.

A family member who spoke to the media on Friday confirmed the governor succumbed to Covid-19 complications.

He was admitted to the health facility three weeks ago and was reportedly taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where he was put on oxygen support.

It was reported that Nyagarama was put on life support on Sunday after his condition deteriorated. Nyagarama’s body was moved to Lee Funeral Home.

In a message of condolence to his family and friends, Uhuru described Nyagarama as a distinguished and true servant of the people.
