Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama Dies from Covid-19 Complications
Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama has died at the age of 74.
Reports indicate Nyagarama passed away while undergoing treatment at the Nairobi Hospital at around 4:00 am on Friday.
A family member who spoke to the media on Friday confirmed the governor succumbed to Covid-19 complications.
He was admitted to the health facility three weeks ago and was reportedly taken to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where he was put on oxygen support.
It was reported that Nyagarama was put on life support on Sunday after his condition deteriorated.
President Kenyatta, Deputy President William Ruto, and ODM leader Raila Odinga are among leaders who have mourned the late governor.
Kenyatta eulogized Nyagarama as a distinguished and true servant of the people.
“As a nation, death has robbed us of a gifted leader whose primary mission was to transform the lives of the residents of Nyamira through his County Government’s development initiatives,” Uhuru said.
DP Ruto tweeted: “Progressive, steadfast and responsive, Governor Nyagarama was industrious, focused and firm. He will be remembered as a leader who built a better, more inclusive, and more transformed Nyamira.”
Odinga said: “Nyagarama has been an extraordinary partner in strengthening devolution. I will forever cherish moments with him on duty and as personal friends.”
Chief Justice David Maraga said: “Coming from the same village, I have known Hon. Nyagarama for many years. I last shared a platform with him only a month ago when I officiated over the opening of the Borabu Law Courts. The people of Nyamira have lost a great and focused leader.”
