Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Impeached

John Wanjohi Dec 03, 2020

The Nairobi County Assembly has impeached Governor Mike Sonko.

88 out of 122 MCAs voted in favor of the motion to remove Sonko from office while two voted against.

The motion tabled by Kileleshwa MCA Michael Ogada required the support of at least 82 Ward Representatives to achieve the required two-thirds majority threshold.

Sonko was ousted on the grounds of abuse of office, gross misconduct, incapability to run county affairs, among other allegations.

The MCAs went ahead to impeach Sonko despite the Employment and Labor Relations Court issuing orders temporarily barring the assembly from debating the ouster motion pending the hearing of a case filed by the Governor.

Sonko’s fate now lies in the hands of the Senate which will vote to either uphold or quash his impeachment.

On Wednesday, Sonko ferried a group of MCAs to Kwale County in an attempt to stop the process by making sure the two-thirds majority requirement is not met. The Sonko-allied MCAs claim the virtual voting system has been rigged.
