One person was killed and scores others injured after chaos broke out in Kenol town, Murang’a County on Sunday morning.

This came after two rival groups clashed on Thika-Murang’a highway ahead of Deputy President William Ruto’s visit to the area for a church fundraiser.

Confirming the 7:30 am incident, Murang'a South Deputy County Commissioner Mawira Mungania said the death was as a result of mob justice.

The ugly confrontation pitted a group of youth supporting President Kenyatta against DP Ruto’s loyalists. Police officers used tear gas to disperse rowdy youths.

By the time DP Ruto arrived at Kenol AIPCA church for the fundraiser at around 10.30 am, normalcy had been restored.

DP Ruto allies led by Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro and Kandara MP Alice Wahome blamed the chaos on Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege, Mathioya MP Peter Kimari, and Interior CS Fred Matiang’i, and Interior PS Karanja Kibicho.

“I want to tell you, Mheshimiwa Kimari, na wewe Kibicho, na wewe Matiang’i, na wewe Sabina Chege na hao wakora wengine, mko na watoto wenu, next time leteni watoto wenu na bibi zenu waandamane,” Nyoro said.

Murang'a Senator Irungu Kang'ata through Twitter condemned the chaos.

"Stop this power struggle, it's causing the nation too much trouble and endangering the lives of innocent ones,” he wrote.
