Uhuru Extends Countrywide Dusk-to-Dawn Curfew by 21 More Days
The nationwide dusk-to-dawn curfew imposed by the government as part of the measures to combat the spread of Covid-19 has been extended by an additional 21 days.
The extension of the 10-hour restriction, which runs daily from 7 pm to 5 am, was announced by President Kenyatta during an address to the nation on Saturday, May 16th.
In addition, the cessation of movement of people into and out of the Nairobi metropolitan area, Mombasa, Kilifi, Kwale, and Mandera counties, has also been extended by a further 21 days. Kenyatta said the embargoes will be reviewed upon their expiry on June 6th, 2020.
At the same time, Uhuru announced new measures aimed at stemming the transmission of the disease in the country. They include the closure of the Kenya-Tanzania and Kenya-Somalia borders for a period of 30 days.
No travelers will be allowed to enter or leave Kenya to or from Tanzania and Somalia through the various border points during the 30-day period.
Kenyatta said only transporters of cargo will be allowed to move in and out of Kenya to Somalia and Tanzania but on condition that they undergo Covid-19 testing.
The closure of the two borders followed an increase in the number of imported cases of Covid-19 from neighboring countries.
In the last one week, 43 of the cases reported in the country were confirmed in border points such as Wajir (14), Isebania (10), Namanga (16), Lungalunga (2), and Loitoktok (1), said Uhuru.
