Machakos County health workers are set to be paid special allowances ranging from Sh5,000 to Sh20,000 for their efforts in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement on Wednesday, Governor Alfred Mutua said the allowances are meant to motivate and appreciate the health workers for the sacrifice they are making as the country fights the scourge.

“In recognition of the sacrifice our Machakos county health workers are making at this time of great stress and extra duties due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Machakos County Government has decided to reward them with additional allowances,” Governor Mutua said.

Medical practitioners working in coronavirus isolation centers in Machakos will earn an extra allowance of Sh20,000 per month.

Those in the Covid-19 surveillance team, which carries door-to-door monitoring of quarantined persons, will also receive a seminal package.

Healthcare workers in other departments will pocket an extra allowance of between Sh10,000, and Sh5,000 per month depending on their work, Governor Mutua said.

“This will, however, be based on their respective duties,” he added.

The special allowances took effect on April 1st, 2020, for an initial period of three months.

Kenya has so far recorded 179 Covid-19 cases, six deaths, and nine recoveries.
