Covid-19: Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria Bans Travelers from Other Counties

John Wanjohi Mar 20, 2020

Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria has announced a ban on travelers from other counties in a bid to avert the spread of coronavirus.

Speaking on Friday, Governor Mwangi said visitors will not be allowed into Murang’a since they place the county under the risk of the pandemic.

Similarly, he asked Murang’a residents not to travel to other counties unless the trip is necessary. He said they have received reports that some residents are traveling to neighboring counties to drink after the county ordered the closure of all bars and entertainment joints.

“I know we have banned partying here, I know some people are moving to other counties to drink, and then they come back, we will not allow that, this coronavirus is not a joke,” said Mwangi.

He said travelers from Murang’a will henceforth be required to explain where they are traveling to and for what reason.

At the same time, Governor Mwangi urged the national government to ban travel between counties, saying this will help combat the spread of the dreaded illness.

“I know this will be unpopular but I do not want visitors in Murang’a from other counties, Murang’a people should also stay in Murang’a, experts say this virus is spread by people moving from one place to the other,” he said.

“This coronavirus is following movement of people, we do not want you to travel and infect people or travel and bring the disease here, we have to be careful.”
