2019 Census: Kikuyu Listed as Most Populous Community with 8 Million People, Kenyan-Americans Among the Least

Kikuyu is the most populous Kenyan community with over eight million members, according to the results of the 2019 population census.

The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) released a final report of the census showing the Kenyan population based on different ethnic groups.

The report listed the Kikuyu community as the most populous ethnic group in the country with a total population of 8,148,668 followed by the Luhya community with 6,823,842 members and the Kalenjin (6,358,113).

The Kamba community is fourth with a population of 5,066,966 followed by Luos (4,663,910), Kenyan Somalis (2,780,502) and the Kisii with 2,703,235 people.

The Mijikenda took position eight with a population of 2,488,691 while Meru and Maasai were 9th and 10th with 1,975,869 and 1,189,522 members respectively.

On the other hand, the Dahalo (575), Kenyan-Americans (596), Gosha (685), El Molo (1104) and the Konso with 1299 were the least populous communities.

Results of the 2019 population census released in November last year put Kenya’s total population at 47.6 million with the number of women being slightly higher than that of men.

Of the 47,564,296 enumerated persons, 23,548,056 (49 percent) were male, 24,014,716 (50.5 percent) female while 1,524 were intersex.

Nairobi was the most populous county with 4,397,073 persons followed by Kiambu (2,417,735), Nakuru (2,162,202), Kakamega (1,867,579) and Bungoma (1,670,570).

The five least populous counties are Lamu with 143,920, Isiolo (268,002), Samburu (310,327), Tana River (315,943) and Taita Taveta (340,671)
