I am Not Married to Uhuru, Ruto Says

John Wanjohi Jan 24, 2020

Deputy President William Ruto appeared to evade a question about alleged differences between him and President Kenyatta.

In an interview with NTV’s Ken Mijungu on Thursday night, Ruto was asked for comment about the end of their ‘bromance’ with Kenyatta. Ruto refused to answer the question, saying Kenyatta and himself should only be asked about the pledges they made to Kenyans.

“Uhuru Kenyatta is married to Margaret and I am married to Rachel. There is no marriage business here. We were elected by Kenyans to do a job, Uhuru as president and I as the Deputy President. What you should be asking me is; are you delivering on the job you were given by Kenyans?” Ruto posed.

He further trashed claims that he was frustrating Kenyatta’s bid to cement his legacy and the fight against corruption, adding that he has always been loyal to the president even as he accused members of the opposition of inciting the president against him.

“I have heard the narrative that I am fighting the President but many people who are running that narrative are people in NASA. They have never voted for Uhuru Kenyatta but are now inciting him against me.”

“I have supported Uhuru Kenyatta at every turn. There is no politician who has done what I have done for him. They insulted him, called him all manner of names and now want to lecture me on how to relate with him. Please give me a break,” Ruto added.

At the same time, DP Ruto alleged that there was a scheme to revive his case at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague which was withdrawn in 2016 for lack of evidence, in order to block his 2022 presidential bid.

“You never know what they are cooking, maybe there will be other cases. They have already arrived at the ICC case and are looking for witnesses so that they can say this case did not end properly. My political opponents want to make every effort to stop my candidature.”
