High Court Declines to Stop Nairobi Governor Sonko’s Impeachment
The High Court has declined to stop the planned impeachment of Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko who was barred from accessing his office over graft charges.
George Bush and Lawrence Oyugi of Concerned Citizens Alliance had moved to court on Monday seeking to have the court issue orders stopping Nairobi MCAs from impeaching Governor Sonko. Instead, High Court judge Weldon Korir directed Bush and Oyugi to file a formal application in regard to the intended impeachment.
Through an oral application on Monday, the two told the court that there is a plan by Nairobi Ward Representatives to remove Governor Sonko from office after he was indicted with several corruption-related charges.
Over 50 MCAs met on Saturday in Nairobi, where they agreed to start collecting signatures for Sonko’s impeachment motion as well as call for a special sitting where the motion will be tabled. Sonko was released on a cash bail of Sh15 million but the court barred him from accessing his office until the Sh357 million graft case is heard and determined.
