Machakos Governor Mutua Opens New Sh50 Million Cancer Centre, Residents to Get Treatment for Free [PHOTOS]

Machakos Governor Alfred Mutua this week launched a Sh50 million Cancer Care and Research Centre, where residents will get free treatment for cancer.

Speaking when he launched the facility on Thursday, Governor Mutua said the center will offer cancer screening, diagnosis, counseling, as well as chemotherapy treatment and management.

Mutua said Machakos residents who are registered under the Universal Health Coverage program will be treated at the facility for free while patients from Makueni and Kitui, which are under the South Eastern Kenya Economic Block (SEKEB), will be offered services at special rates.

The new facility is premised at Machakos Level 5 Referral Hospital and aims at providing cancer treatment at affordable prices.

“We want to ensure that cancer treatment is for all of us, not just a few. Treatment for cancer must not be a preserve for the rich in society. Every resident of Machakos no matter how poor will be entitled to equivalent treatment as the rich who own bungalows and top of the range vehicles,” said Mutua.

Mutua said his administration will set aside Sh300 million in the next budget for the purchase of more equipment for the cancer facility.

“This center can undertake the highest quality of diagnosis and provide chemotherapy. Our strategy is to have several diagnostic and treatment centers spread all over the county within the next three years,” he said.

He added: “We will also utilize telemedicine for consultations between our doctors and experts in America, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Europe, and our African continent.”
