John Wanjohi Jun 02, 2019

United States envoy to Kenya Kyle McCarter has hailed the unveiling of new Kenyan banknotes.

Taking to social media, Ambassador McCarter welcomed the Central Bank of Kenya's announcement that the old Sh1,000 will cease to be legal tender from October 1st.

The envoy said the move is the right step towards taming thievery in the country.

“Great news. One more tool that can be used to stop the plague of thievery keeping the wananchi from the prosperity they deserve,” he said in a tweet.

The United Kingdom High Commissioner to Kenya Nic Hailey has also praised the move stating: “This announcement on the 1,000 bob note is great news. Anyone who has been stashing proceeds of corruption in cash, to avoid oversight, will have to explain where their wealth came from. Welcome @StateHouseKenya tough stand on corruption.”

The new currency notes were launched during Madaraka Day Celebrations at Narok Stadium on Saturday.

Speaking during the unveiling, CBK Governor Dr. Patrick Njoroge said Kenyans have until October 1st, 2019, to exchange all the older Sh1,000 bank notes.

“All the older Ksh.1000 series shall be withdrawn. All persons have until October 1, 2019, to exchange these notes, after which the older ones will cease to be legal tender,” said Njoroge.
