Waititu Obtains Sh500,000 Anticipatory Bail Hours After Arrest

John Wanjohi May 23, 2019

Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has obtained an anticipatory bail of Sh500,000 following his arrest on Thursday morning.

The bail was granted by Kiambu Senior Resident Magistrate Bryan Khaemba hours after Governor Waititu's arrest.

Magistrate Khaemba directed the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to release the Governor upon receipt of the orders.

“Any party served with this order and disobeys the same or any part thereof shall be guilty of contempt of court and liable to fine or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months or both,” reads the order.

Governor Waititu was arrested alongside his daughter Diana at his home in Runda, Nairobi after EACC detectives raided three of his homes.

In a statement, the anti-graft watchdog said Waititu was apprehended over alleged irregular contracts worth Sh588 million and money laundering.

Waititu is accused of awarding the said tenders to companies linked to him and members of his immediate family.

“As part of the ongoing investigation, search operations were conducted by EACC on May 23, 2019, in the homes and offices of the Kiambu County Governor, his family members, directors of private companies and ten senior employees of the county government,” the statement reads.

Governor Waititu is also facing accusations of illegal acquisition of taxpayers’ funds and conflict of interest.
