Nairobi Lawyer Assa Nyakundi Charged with Manslaughter over Son's Shooting
Nairobi lawyer Assa Nyakundi has been arraigned in court over the killing of his son last month.
Appearing before Senior Principal Magistrate Bosibori Nyang’ena on Friday, Nyakundi was charged with manslaughter.
Nyakundi was released on a cash bail of Sh300,000 and a surety of Sh1 million.
The court has also directed the lawyer to immediately vacate his Muthaiga North home immediately to pave way for investigations into the shooting.
Nyakundi told police that he accidentally shot his 29-year-old son Joseph Bogonko Nyakundi on March 17th, 2019 near his house.
He said he was trying to holster his firearm while in the car when he accidentally pulled the trigger, shooting his son in the chest, a statement that contradicts an autopsy report.
The report indicates that Bogonko was shot from outside the car and succumbed to injuries and excessive bleeding.
“The shot projection from the chest exiting at the back suggested that whoever shot him was standing outside the rear right back door of motor vehicle KCE 753B Toyota Axio which belongs to the father of deceased," the autopsy report reads in part.
The deceased was laid to rest at the Lang’ata Cemetery on April 2nd.
“The angle of shooting according to the projection could be ninety degrees, suggesting there was a confrontation,” the autopsy report adds.
Nyakundi has also been directed to report to the investigating officer regularly for the next 14 days.
He has been in the hospital for weeks and was discharged on Tuesday this week. He was hospitalized after developing shock symptoms while in police custody hours after the shooting incident.
The case will be mentioned on June 20th, 2019.
