Explosion in Nairobi CBD Near Odeon Cinema

John Wanjohi Jan 26, 2019

An explosion has been reported at the Tom Mboya-Latema Road junction near Odeon Cinema in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD).

Initial reports indicate that the suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated shortly after a man reported to be of Somali descent handed over luggage to a bookseller.

The suspect had allegedly hired a cart pusher to carry the box containing the explosion device and fled before it exploded.

Nairobi Central OCPD Robinson Thuku has confirmed the incident that occurred at around 7 pm. Two people have sustained injuries.

The incident comes nearly two weeks after the January 15th terror attack at the upmarket DusitD2 complex on 14 Riverside Drive in Westlands, Nairobi where 21 people lost their lives.

The Somali-based Islamic terrorist organization Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility.

On Friday, the US embassy in Nairobi issued a security alert urging Kenyans to be vigilant, especially in public places.

“The US Embassy reminds the public of the continued need for sustained vigilance in public spaces such as shopping malls, hotels, and places of worship,” reads the statement released on Friday.
