President Kenyatta Wants Civil Servants Barred from Owning Private Businesses

President Kenyatta wants civil servants barred from owning private businesses in the latest plan by the government in the fight against corruption.

To achieve this, Kenyatta has directed Attorney-General Paul Kihara to draft a bill that will legally prohibit public servants from private business.

President Uhuru says the law will help tackle the crisis of conflict of interest, which is blamed for fueling corruption.

“State or public officers will have one choice: Serve in the public arena or go and do private business!” said Kenyatta in his speech during the just concluded anti-corruption conference at the Bomas of Kenya, Nairobi.

Kenyatta has affirmed his commitment in the war against graft, stating that no one will be spared in the ongoing purge.

“No person is beyond the reach of the arm of the law no matter how powerful and influential they perceive themselves to be,” says Kenyatta.

He has further vowed to ensure that all proceeds of corruption stashed locally and overseas will be recovered.

“No matter which corner of the globe you hide stolen funds from Kenya, that illicit wealth is no longer beyond the reach of the Kenyan government. Step by step we shall win this war.”

At the same time, President Uhuru has accused the judiciary of frustrating the war on corruption by granting injunctions to graft suspects.

“Our courts must stop the practice of using injunctions against investigation of corrupt activities, issuing these orders makes it easier for them to destroy evidence and intimidate witnesses,” says Kenyatta.
