President Kenyatta, DP Ruto Quell Rumors of Possible Fallout with Lunch Date in Mombasa

John Wanjohi Jan 23, 2019

President Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto have appeared to quell fears of possible fallout between them.

Kenyatta and Ruto have on Wednesday taken lunch together at Barka Restaurant in Old Town, Mombasa.

The lunch date comes barely a day after President Kenyatta through an Executive Order number one of 2019, appointed Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i as the Chairperson of the National Development Implementation and Communication Cabinet Committee.

The committee, which is made up of all Cabinet Secretaries, will oversee and coordinate the implementation of all government projects.

The move means Matiang'i will be supervising all state projects including the ambitious President Uhuru's big four action plan.

However, political commentators and a section of Kenyans online were quick to point out that in handing Matiang'i the powerful role, Kenyatta deliberately trimmed down responsibilities and powers from Ruto.

Many argue that Ruto, by virtue of being the President's principal assistant, should have been given the role.

Ruto, who describes himself as Kenyatta's " mtu wa mkono", has been traversing the country to launch and supervise development projects on behalf of the President.
