Nairobi Attack a Revenge for US President Donald Trump Stand on Jerusalem, Al-Shabaab Says
Somalia-based Islamic terror organization, Al-Shabaab has revealed why it launched Tuesday's deadly terror attack at dusitD2 Complex along 14 Riverside Drive in Nairobi's Westlands area.
In a statement, the terror group, which has claimed responsibility for the Nairobi attack, says the attack was in response to United States President Donald Trump’s action to recognize Jerusalem as Israeli's capital.
"The Mujahideen (holy warriors) carried out this operation … (as) a response to the witless remarks of U.S. president, Donald Trump, and his declaration of Al-Quds (Jerusalem) as the capital of Israel" the statement reads.
Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israeli capital on December 6th, 2017 and later announced that the US would move its embassy from Tel Aviv, a decision that is believed to have angered Arab world and Western allies alike.
Jerusalem's status as home to the Muslim, Jewish and Christian religions' holy sites is one of the biggest cause of decades-long war between Israel and the Palestinians.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israeli's capital as a “historic landmark,” but Britain and France have remained critical of the move.
“I have determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel,” Trump said in a speech at the White House.
“While previous presidents have made this a major campaign promise, they failed to deliver. Today, I am delivering.”
The Kenya government has confirmed that 21 people, including one US citizen and a British national, were killed during the attack.
