Juliet Irene Otieno from Pangani Girls in Nairobi has emerged as the top student in this year's Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination.

Releasing the results of the exam on Friday afternoon, Education Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed says Ms. Otieno emerged the best after scoring an A (stand) of 87.644 points.

Amina says there is a significant improvement in performance in this year's examination compared to 2017 and 2016.

The number of candidates who have attained an A in 2018 examination has risen to 315 from 142 recorded the previous year.

A total of 90,377 candidates have attained the minimum university entry grade of C+ (plus) down from 70,073 in last year's examination.

CS Amina has named Josephat Kamau Mwangi of Mihoro Secondary School in Murang’a County as the most improved student after he managed to get an A- (minus) having joined the high school with 278 marks.

Results for 100 students have been canceled over alleged cheating.
