Emotions Ran High As Slain Varsity Student Sharon Otieno's 7-Month-Old Unborn Baby is Buried
The seven-month-old unborn baby of slain Rongo University student Sharon Otieno was buried in Magare Village, Homa Bay County on Friday evening after a six-hour delay.
The funeral ceremony was delayed after the morgue where the foetus was being preserved withheld the remains demanding the family presents a burial permit. The family failed to secure a burial permit in time.
Luo community traditions require that children be buried before noon but the hitch forced them to break this norm. Sharon's mother Melida Auma said the permit was to be processed at Rachuonyo District Hospital mortuary where postmortem examination was done.
The baby’s body was released to the family at 4pm after doctors from Rachuonyo Level 4 Hospital mortuary sent the permit to morgue operators through WhatsApp.
Emotions ran high during the burial ceremony presided over by Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) Reverend Samuel Allan. The cleric called on members of the public to avoid making insensitive statements over the murder of the 26-year-old student.
Sharon’s family maintains it will not bury their daughter until those who killed her are arrested and prosecuted.
The lifeless body of Sharon was found near Kodera Forest in Homa Bay two days after she was abducted from a hotel in Rongo town about two weeks ago.
An autopsy report revealed that she died from excessive bleeding after she was stabbed eight times in the stomach, neck and back.
