President Uhuru Will Stop this, Raila Assures Kenyans on Hiked Fuel Prices

John Wanjohi Sep 02, 2018

Opposition leader Raila Odinga has assured Kenyans that President Uhuru Kenyatta will stop the 16 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) imposed on fuel, which went in effect on September 1st.

Speaking in Kisumu on Sunday, Odinga said he was confident that the President would halt the move once he signs the Finance Bill 2018 passed by Members of Parliament on Thursday to push the implementation of the increased taxation on petroleum products to 2020.

“The issue of increasing fuel prices cannot continue, it has to stop."

“Members of Parliament already made amendments to the (Finance) Bill and removed the 16% V.A.T, (President) Uhuru will intervene very soon, just wait and see," Odinga assured.

This follows public uproar after Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) on Saturday announced hiked fuel prices.
President Kenyatta left the country for China on Friday evening.

Motorists in Nairobi will pay Sh127.80 for a litre of super petrol while those in Mombasa will pay Sh 124.49. Those in Mandera will pay the highest for a litre of super petrol at Sh141.61 while Motorists in Nakuru will buy it at Sh128.46.

Raila further reiterated his support to the President in the ongoing purge corruption.
