Waititu Begs Sonko to Release His Wife after She Was Arrested over Illegal Building in Nairobi [VIDEO]
Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu's wife Susan Wangare was on Wednesday morning arrested in a swoop on illegal buildings in Nairobi.
Mrs Waititu was arrested by Nairobi City County government officers alongside 14 other people for erecting an eight-story building without the necessary approvals.
Owners of Jamii Bora building located along Koinange Street in City Centre and Delta Hotel were others arrested in the operation.
Wangare was locked in a cell at City Hall for some hours before Governor Mike Sonko allegedly ordered her release. Nairobi County Director of communication Elkana Jacob said she was freed on a cash bail of Sh50,000.
Her arrest came after Governor Waititu opposed the ongoing demolition of buildings constructed on riparian in Nairobi.
“If your house is near a river, you should be told to move the river at [your] own cost. Demolishing houses is not a solution. Honestly speaking, it’s such a big loss,” he said during a thanksgiving service for Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung'wah at Gikambura.
“The owners of the buildings are innocent people who perhaps got loans from banks or received their retirement packages and invested in construction of the buildings,” said Waititu in an interview with local TV station on Tuesday.
“They (building owners) are the victims… the mistake is not on their side because they received all the required documents needed for constructing the buildings from the necessary government offices.”
In a video that has since gone viral online, Waititu was heard begging Governor Mike Sonko to release his wife.
