KRA to Pursue Kenyans who Failed to File Tax Returns
The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has said it will not extend period for Kenyans to file tax returns following the elapse of the June 30th deadline.
Speaking on Monday, KRA Taxpayer Services Chief Manager Judith Njagi said 3.2 million filed their return by the Saturday midnight deadline. She said the taxman will begin sending notices with Sh20,000 fine to those who failed to file.
The official said KRA will also start pursuing individuals with Personal Identification Number (PIN), but failed to file returns.
“All taxpayers are still encouraged to file. The penalty for late filing of all the annual returns is five per cent of tax due or Sh20,000, whichever is higher,” Ms Njagi said, adding that only those who applied for late filling will be exempted from the Sh20,000 fine.
In 2015, KRA raised the penalty for failure to file returns to Sh20,000 from Sh1, 000 fined previously in a bid to tame tax cheats.
