Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Sends Home Minister for Traveling to the US
Billionaire Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has suspended a top county government official for allegedly defying his orders not to travel abroad.
In a letter, Sonko asked County Executive in charge of Devolution Veska Kangongo to step aside for reportedly traveling to the United States on June 1st, yet the Governor had instructed her not to proceed with the trip.
“It has come to attention of this office that you traveled to the United States on 1st June, 2018 having received express instructions from the Governor not to proceed with the trip prior to departure,” reads part of a letter addressed to Ms. Kangongo by the County Secretary, Peter Kariuki.
Ms. Kangongo has been ordered to vacate office immediately, and has been given one week to table her response over the matter.
“Your failure to obey lawful instructions from your appointing authority is tantamount to insubordination and therefore, you are hereby directed to step aside from your duties as County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Devolution and Public Service Management and proceed on leave pending provision of a satisfactory response as to why you traveled without express authority,” reads the letter.
It is yet to be known why Sonko had barred her from jetting out of the country. Ms. Kangongo was initially serving as the County Finance Executive before she was moved to the Devolution docket during a reshuffle by the Governor in March.
