Why MPs Will Hold Demonstrations in Nairobi on Monday

John Wanjohi Mar 25, 2018

Members of Parliament will on Monday hold peaceful demonstrations at Nation Media Group and Royal Media Services Offices, Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria has said.

In a Facebook post, Kuria said the lawmakers will seek audience with the management of the two media outlets over their recent negative and unverified reporting about MPs.

The protests come following a story that linked Murang’a Woman Representative Sabina Chege to 25-year-old Wazir Benson Chacha, who is accused of using fake Mpesa accounts to con MPs and Cabinet Secretaries (CSs).

"Members of parliament will hold a peaceful march to the CEOs of Nation Media Group and Royal Media on Monday to protest this affront (The story about Ms Chege and the conman).

The reports by the media houses quoted Director of Criminal Investigations George Kinoti saying that the suspect had a "special" relationship with Ms Chege.

"We have carried in-depth investigations on this matter and come to the conclusion that there is a special relation between complaints (MPs) and the suspect which I may not be comfortable discussing in public,” Kinoti reportedly told the committee as quoted by media outlets.

However, in a statement on Twitter, DCI denied linking the conman to Ms Chege, terming the media reports as false and misleading.

"The Director of Criminal Investigations would wish to clarify allegations by some media houses, that Hon. Sabina Chege is said to have had a special relationship with a suspect being pursued by Police. The allegations are not only false but also misleading," DCI tweeted on Friday.
