Late Nyeri Governor Gakuru's Family to Get Sh56 Million from County Gov't
The family of the late Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru is set to receive Sh56 million in compensation and insurance from the Nyeri county government.
A budget report presented to the county assembly by Budget Committee Chairman Gibson Kuria, shows that Sh36 million has been set aside as compensation to the late governor's family, Sh20 million in insurance premium cover and a further Sh10 million to cater for expenses incurred during his burial.
The compensation to the Gakuru's family is more than the Sh10 million that families of Members of Parliament who pass away while in office get from their life insurance policy.
Dr Gakuru died following a road accident at Kabati area along the Thika-Murang'a highway on November 7th.
Gakuru became the second Nyeri Governor to pass on while in office, after the county's first governor Nderitu Gachagua succumbed to cancer while receiving treatment at a hospital in London early this year. tehn-Deputy Governor Samuel Wamathai took over the governorship after Gachagua's death but lost the seat in the August 8th general election to Dr Gakuru.
Mutahi Kahiga, who was Deputy Governor before Gakuru's death, has since taken over as the fourth Nyeri county Governor.
