Supreme Court Upholds President Uhuru's Re-election

The Kenyan Supreme Court has on Monday morning upheld President Uhuru Kenyatta's October 26th victory.

Reading the unanimous verdict, Chief Justice David Maraga dismissed the two petitions seeking to have Uhuru's win cancelled.

Maraga ruled that the petition by former Kilome Member of Parliament Harun Mwau and another by members of civil society Njonjo Mue and Khelef Khalifa lacked merit and thus dismissed.

"The court has unanimously determined that the petitions are not merited. The petitions are hereby dismissed. The presidential election is upheld," Chief Justice David Marag said.

The hearings of the two petitions concluded on Thursday evening after petitioners, respondents and interested parties made their oral submissions before the six judges.

Chief Justice David Maraga, his deputy Philomena Mwilu and justices Njoki Ndung'u, Jackton Ojwang, Smoking Wanjala and Isaac Lenaola presided over the petition.

The respondents were Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), its chair Wafula Chebukati and President Uhuru. Presidential candidate Ekuru Aukot and Attorney General Githu Muigai were interested parties in the two petitions.

The six judges will read the detailed judgment in 21 days. The ruling paves way for the Swearing-in of President Uhuru on November 28th.
