NASA Cancels Friday's Street Demonstrations
The opposition National Super Alliance (NASA) has called off its anti-Uhuru demonstrations that had been scheduled for Friday in Nairobi.
Siaya Senator James Orengo said the protests were postponed due to the motion seeking to form the People's Assembly, which is currently being debated in various county assemblies.
“This is to enable the coalition’s leaders and supporters concentrate on and support the initiative that is intended to have the people exercise their sovereignty directly and chart their future through a people’s assembly,” Orengo said in the statement.
NASA had on Wednesday written to Nairobi County Police Commander Japheth Koome asking for police protection to the demonstrators. “You are hereby notified of the same and requested to provide security during the said procession/ demonstration to ensure criminal elements do not take advantage to harm protesters, the public or any property,” read part of a letter by lawyer Edwin Sifuna on behalf of NASA. “Your cooperation towards making the peaceful demonstration a success, in line with your responsibilities under the law, will be highly appreciated,” it adds.
Orengo said the coalition will announce new dates for the demos later on.
