Call for Probe into Fatal Crash that Claimed Nyeri Governor Wahome Gakuru's Life

John Wanjohi Nov 08, 2017

The Council of Governors (CoG) has asked police to conduct investigations to establish the cause of a fatal road crash that claimed Nyeri Governor Dr Wahome Gakuru's life.

Speaking at Serena Hotel on Tuesday, the governors said they want the circumstances leading to the accident investigated.

“I’m asking the CID director Ndegwa Muhoro to thoroughly investigate this incident,” Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko said.

Flanked by governors Josphat Nanok (Turkana), Mwangi wa Iria (Murang'a) and Kirinyaga's Anne Waiguru, Sonko also raised concerns over the immediate taking over of deputy governors upon the death of governors.

“I’m also against that law that states the deputy governor should automatically take over from the governor in the case of death. Like in this case, I’m told the deputy governor could be sworn in tomorrow. That law needs to be changed even if we go for a referendum,” said Sonko.

CoG chairman Josephat Nanok saud the council will hold a meeting on Wednesday morning to discuss Dr Gakuru’s send-off.

The governor died while receiving treatment at Thika Level 5 hospital following a dawn road crash at Kabati area along Thika-Kenol highway on Tuesday.

The county boss was headed to Nairobi from Nyeri and was scheduled to appear in two different morning TV shows.
