NASA Governor Defies Raila, Votes in Thursday's Repeat Election

Taita-Taveta Governor Granton Samboja defied calls by National Super Alliance (NASA) leaders to boycott Thursday's repeat presidential election.

Samboja, who was elected on Kalonzo Musyoka's Wiper Democratic Party, cast his ballot on Thursday at Mwakishimba Primary School in Taita Taveta.

Addressing the media shortly after voting, the first time governor said it was his right to vote just like any other Kenyan.

“The process was smooth. Voting is a democratic right of every Kenyan as enshrined in the Constitution,” he said.

Samboja, who has indicated he will work with President Uhuru Kenyatta after attending Jubilee campaign rallies a few weeks ago, could be the only Nasa governor who took part in the exercise.

Samboja also called on politicians across the political divide to preach peace, adding that Kenya is our only country and we cannot afford to destroy it.

Former Taita-Taveta Governor John Mruttu also voted at Saint Patrick Kimala Primary School in Taveta constituency at 10am.

“Our electoral system has improved and we are better than most countries in election management. We only need to follow the law,” Mruttu said after voting.

Mruttu, a former ODM governor who has since defected to Jubilee also dismissed the newly formed National Resistance Movement by the opposition.

“We must use the laws that we have. We cannot be calling for reforms every now and then without using the existing laws to seek solutions,” he said.
