Raila Calls Off anti-IEBC Demos Until Further Notice
The National Super Alliance (NASA) has called off its nationwide anti-IEBC demonstrations until further notice.
In a statement by Nasa leader Raila Odinga, the coalition said it would give further instructions to its supporters regarding the protests after the Mashujaa Day celebrations this Friday.
Reports indicate that the decision was arrived at following the death of a number of opposition supporters during the demos against the electoral commission over the past weeks.
In the press statement, Raila accused acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matinag’i and the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet of “facilitating security officers to execute a murderous expedition against unarmed and innocent civilians”.
“In honour of the innocent victims of the State, our protests will stay suspended. On Friday, we will mark the memory of these victims as heroes of the struggle for electoral justice at a venue to be disclosed later. On that day, we shall communicate our next course of action,” said Raila.
Raila called for the end of the brutality by the police, saying it was taking the country backwards. “The government must stop this alliance between thugs and security officers and the unconstitutional and reckless deployment of troops to annihilate NASA supporters,” he said.
On Tuesday, the High Court temporarily suspended government ban on anti-IEBC protests in Nairobi Mombasa and Kisumu CBDs issued by Matiang'i last week pending the determination of a case filed by NASA CEO Norman Magaya.
