UK 'Disapproves' Raila's Withdrawal from the October 26th Election, Jubilee's Electoral Law Amendments

The United Kingdom has expressed concerns over the withdrawal of opposition presidential candidate Raila Odinga and the rush by the ruling Jubilee party to introduce amendments on electoral laws.

In a statement issued by Minister for Africa Rory Stewart on Friday, the UK government pointed out that the rushed amendments would bring unnecessary tension in the country.

Stewart issued the statement following a meeting with Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Monica Juma and opposition leader Raila Odinga at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London.

"UK is a strong supporter of Kenya's constitution and institutions. It is important for all Kenyans that elections take place in line with the Supreme Court decision of September 1st."

He called on political actors to work together for the benefit of Kenyans.

In a separate meeting with NASA chief Raila Odinga, Stewart said it was regrettable that he bowed out of the presidential race.

"I emphasised my regret to [Raila] over his decision to withdraw from elections...and urged the former Prime Minister to work with others to ensure democratic elections happen as per the constitution."

Raila arrived in London on Wednesday night and is expected to hold a brief with high profile personalities in the UK, US and Europe on the row facing Kenya's repeat poll. He will also deliver a lecture at Chatham house before jetting back to the country on Saturday.

The National Assembly and the Senate have already passed the Electoral Bills and all eyes are now on President Uhuru to assent to them into Law.
