Babu Owino: I Was Tortured While in Police Custody
Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino claims that he was tortured while in Police custody following his arrest on Wednesday.
Speaking while he was arraigned at Kibera law courts on Thursday, the youthful MP told the judge that he was tortured at Pangani Police Station.
He alleged that police officers sent street children to harass and intimidate him while at the station.
The former Students Organization Nairobi University (SONU) was first arrested in Monday and spent two nights in custody and was charged with subversion among other charges at the Milimani law courts. He was released on sh500,000 bail.
However, the MP was rearrested moments after being freed and ws taken to Pangani police station where he spent another night. He was arraigned in Kibera court where he was charged with assault and blocking a voter from participating in August 8th election at a polling station in Embakasi.
While pleading with the judge at the Kibera to grant him release on bail, Babu said he was tortured, harrassed and intimidated at the police cell, where he spent his night. He was freed on Sh 500,000 cash bail.
On Thursday, students from the University of Nairobi engaged in running battles with General Service Unit (GSU) anti-riot squads as they demanded for the release of the Embakasi East MP.
The case in which he was charged with subversion will be mentioned on Wednesday October 4, 2017.
