3,000 Ukambani Leaders Endorse President Uhuru's Re-election

John Wanjohi Sep 10, 2017

About 3,000 Ukambani politicians have thrown their weight behind President Uhuru Kenyatta in the October 17th repeat election after ditching opposition National Super Alliance (NASA).

Led by former Kitui senator David Musila, the leaders drawn from the three Ukambani counties of Machakos, Kitui, and Makueni endorsed President Uhuru Kenyatta's reelection and pledged to conduct an aggressive campaign for Jubilee in the region.

Ukambani region is widely considered a NASA stronghold having largely voted for Raila during the August 8th general election.

Speakers at the meeting said they were tired of being in the opposition and now want to be in the government for the benefit of their people.

"We strongly condemn leaders who want to continue keeping us in the opposition despite the fact that they did not achieve much for the community when they were in power." They said after a meeting of the Kamba Leaders Forum in Athi River on Saturday.

"We declare that Ukambani is no longer an Opposition zone and that we the Kamba people vehemently refuse to be used as pawns in other people’s perennial failed quest for power," they said.

The mass walk-out from the Opposition by the leaders was endorsed among others, a section of Jubilee elected MPs led by Rachel Nyamai (Kitui South) Nimrod Mbai (Kitui East), and Victor Munyaka (Machakos Town).
