President Uhuru, Raila Mourn Students Killed in Dawn Fire Tragedy at Moi Girls in Nairobi

President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition's National Super Alliance (NASA) leader, Raila Odinga have led the nation in mourning the seven of students of Moi Girls High School in Kibra, Nairobi, who died following a dawn school fire.

In a statement to newsrooms, Uhuru and Odinga said they were saddened by the loss of lives of the young students.

"I was deeply saddened and pained by news of last night's fire at Moi Girls' School, Nairobi.
The young women touched by this tragedy are the best of us: diligent, committed to learning, and prepared to make a difference in the life of the country they love. I mourn with the families who have lost loved ones, and I pray that those injured will recover quickly and fully,".

"The families affected, as well as the school and all who wish it well, can be sure that we will investigate the matter fully, and act appropriately, so that this sort of tragedy doesn't recur. We need to protect our sons and daughters, and we will,".

"I pray that the departed will rest in eternal peace; and I pray that all those touched by this tragedy will find consolation and encouragement in God's grace," Said President Uhuru.

“Mama Ida and I are deeply saddened by the fire tragedy that occurred earlier today (Saturday) at Moi Girls High School, Nairobi and that claimed lives of seven young girls and left scores injured. We grieve the brutal death of such nice and innocent children who had just reported back to school for the final term of the year,” said the Odinga’s in the statement.

“We pray for the families, who must be struggling for answers at this moment. We also stand with the fraternity of the school, including students, workers, teachers and parents for what they are going through at this moment.”

Seven students have so far been confirmed dead from the inferno while ten others are still hospitalized after sustaining serious injuries.

The school, located Nairobi’s Kibra area has since been closed for two weeks as investigations into the cause of the fire begin.

Odinga has challenged the government to speed up probe into the matter and make the findings public.

“It is our hope that the government will quickly conduct investigations and share findings with the public on the cause of the fire as that will be critical to helping the parents and students cope with the loss,” he said.
